Elise is a tattoo artist – her body a living canvas. Many of her clients had her cover their own with the names of lovers who have meanwhile been forgotten. She meets Didier and learns all about love. They become a couple and then parents. When their daughter Maybelle is born, their love seems to have reached a level of perfection, but seven years later the little girl is diagnosed with cancer. The fight for their daughter's survival, in which Elise and Didier are so helpless, threatens to destroy their love as well.

Felix van Groeningen's film is a masterfully told tragedy. Unconventionally structured, it never sinks into shallow melodrama, instead offering genuine, emotional cinema. A true experience.
