The Company You Keep

Movie Rating: Constantin Xenakis

A journalist tracks down a former activist accused of murder who's been living quietly under an assumed name.

A mother named Sharon Solarz is arrested by the FBI: she is a former activist they've been chasing for 30 years who has decided to give herself up. A talented young journalist picks up the story, discovering that a widowed lawyer in Albany, New York living under an assumed name is really Nick Sloan, the former leader of a group of ultra-left-wing activists called the Weather Underground – the same organization Solarz belonged to. Also a suspect in a bank job gone wrong, Sloan goes on the run to contact former comrades...

Although it's not as significant as other political thrillers by the legendary Robert Redford, The Company You Keep nonetheless has rare value in raising questions like why people struggle for a better society, and in intelligently avoiding action scenes done 1000 times before. With subject matter that is ancient history for young audiences and an impressive cast from the 1970's and 80's (Robert Redford, Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Susan Sarandon) the movie risks attracting mainly mature viewers.
