All Is Lost
A one-man Odyssey about the adventure of an experienced sailor (Robert Redford).
As he sails along the wide expanse of ocean, an unnamed man (Robert Redford) enjoys the scenery of endless sky and water. Why is he there, where is he going? The lone sailor glides through the Indian Ocean, lost in thought – when he’s woken by a bang. His boat has hit a huge freight container that’s bobbing around in the ocean and is taking in water. The experienced seaman keeps his cool, fixing the hole as best he can. But then a storm comes, and with it some serious waves. His yacht gets tossed around and our hero has no idea whether he’s going to survive. Then the ocean goes back to being calm, leaving the man and his boat to fend for themselves.
The sun burns, provisions are getting slim, sharks and hallucinations are circling around him. A man left exposed to the elements tries to find a stronghold. What is beautifully filmed is perhaps not as significant these days – did Redford and director J.C. Chandor not have a more important, up-to-date message for today’s audience than "we’re all mortal"? In addition to a few continuity errors (Redford shaves once and stays clean-shaven after that), the drama seems random and predictable – and superficial. Redford fans will get their due, but everyone else will ask themselves whether life is so easy to save, even when you drown.
