August: Osage County
A typically dysfunctional family falls apart in Oklahoma. Drama starring Julie Roberts and Meryl Streep.
One hot summer in the middle of Oklahoma, a typically dysfunctional family falls apart. Upset by the death of the patriarch, the Weston clan gathers in a house full of memories for some dramatic revelations. At the forefront is the oldest daughter Barbara, who is once again confronted by her merciless, alcoholic mother.
Behind this bit of Oscar-bait drama with an excellent ensemble cast, including Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, hides a tragedy that is intensely brutal and frighteningly dark. Because behind this disastrous family reunion is screenwriter Tracy Letts, the amazing playwright, who also adapted his two other plays, Bug and Killer Joe, which were directed by William Friedkin. Thanks to a cast of characters with astonishing complexity and subjects handled with finesse, August: Osage County avoids the worst pitfalls of the genre, with no happy end resolutions.
