Avant l'hiver
A settled 60-something couple’s life is turned upside down by a young woman who stalks the husband.
A renowned neurosurgeon, Paul (Daniel Auteuil) lives with Lucie (Kristin Scott Thomas), a very beautiful, loving woman who drags her boredom throughout their designer home while he operates. She works passionately in the garden passion to deal with the absence of her busy husband. When bouquets of red roses are repeatedly delivered anonymously, their quiet existence is sown with doubt. Paul suspects that Lou, a young woman he met in a café and keeps bumping into, seems to have fallen for his charms as a mature man. But when a couple has known each other for so long, lies are hard to hide and will soon throw their ordered lives into disarray. This marks the time to take stock of the decades that have passed...
A boring spectacle, this tale of an aging bourgeois couple who, seeing winter approach – an allegory that is quite overdone – use the moment to take stock of their lives. To the point where there is no intrigue and no surprises worthy of a thriller “à l'américaine”. If these kinds of characters and these kinds of movies are what’s in store for us this season, winter will in effect be quite long.
