Jeremy Saulnier’s second movie takes place in America’s redneck country and is reminiscent of recent projects such as Shotgun Stories by Jeff Nichols, and Animal Kingdom by David Michôd. But what’s lacking in this story about vengeance and families is true intensity. Without any tragic energy, the film quickly reveals itself to be hollow and full of caricatures, with a lead so difficult to figure out that it’s almost comical (his oddly handled thigh wound). This movie would need a lot more depth to become a real revenge flick.
