Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A failed musician lost in the bottle convinces an unknown but talented singer to record an album.

One night in a New York bar, Dan hears Greta – who was pushed onstage by a friend – sing. Dan is drunk, separated from his wife, failing as a dad, and fired from his job as a producer at the independent label he founded. Greta has been dumped by her musician boyfriend who chose his career over her, and is scheduled to go back to England the next day. Convinced Greta has talent, Dan decides to help her record a unique album in the streets of the city, with the help of some kind-hearted musicians...

After 2006's surprise hit Once, which won an Oscar for best original song, Irish director/screenwriter John Carney sunk back under the radar. New York Melody (Begin Again), his first Hollywood film, should change that, thanks to its incredible tenderness and irresistible sweetness. And thanks to a simple story that flirts with naïve romance, he has made a superb dramatic comedy that isn’t as silly as it seems, with an excellent cast of characters. The marvelous chemistry between Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley should convince the more stubbornly reluctant.
