Carrie
A teenager’s life turns into pure horror.
Carrie White isn’t your ordinary teenager. Harassed and tormented daily at high-school, she has no friends and no notion of what happiness feels like apart from the vague impression she gets watching with envy the young women around her. The victim of her fanatical mother’s cruel discipline, who’s only guideline is a terrible fear of God, she finds no solace at home. When cursed puberty hits, along with humiliation come strange and wonderful powers.
This new adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic by Kimberly Pierce fails to convince. Where Brian De Palma managed to be truly frightening while addressing the blurring line between good and evil going out of childhood, Pierce remains very naive, painting a cliché picture of typical teenagers. Because of this, nothing feels unsettling or surprising, also because every scene is so similar to de Palma’s classic. When it comes to the acting, Julianne Moore is appropriately chilling but Chlöe Moretz as Carrie sadly never accesses the eeriness the role demands, often overacting in a rather awkward way.
