Die Frau, die sich traut
Last wish: crossing the English Channel. A German former swimmer with cervical cancer gives it one more try.
In her youth, Beate was one of the best swimmers in the GDR. Meanwhile, the 50-year-old is fully occupied with her family – she has her hands full, but isn’t fulfilled. When the doctor tells her she has cervical cancer, Beate decides to take on her dream: swimming the English Channel. What follows is not only a race against the cold currents, it’s also a struggle against the resistance of her own family – and her time left to live.
A subtle script it’s not. A shame, because the performance of the movie’s star, Steffi Kühnert, is so perfect and likeable that she easily wins the audience’s hearts. It would not have been necessary to draw the opposing lines so strongly. But despite its faults, this is an entertaining German production.
