Two mentally disabled adolescents fall in love.

United by a passion for music in their local choir, Gabrielle and Martin quickly fall in love. A story of first love and adolescent discovery like any other, except that the two are mentally disabled. As they prepare for an important show, those close to them begin to get worried about the status of their relationship, so Gabrielle decides to prove she is capable of having a loving relationship like anyone else...

Despite the affection with which this unusual love story is told and the quality performances delivered by the lead actors, Gabrielle, the second film by Canadian director Louise Archambault, has too many weaknesses. It is a delicate immersion into another world, filmed during its best moments like a documentary about a choir of adolescents with mental disabilities. But its resolution is too simplistic and doesn’t delve very deeply into the interior struggle of its stars. All the more disappointing, because first-time actress Gabrielle Marion-Rivard does such an excellent job.
