Grudge Match
Two former boxers, now in their 60’s, go back into the ring 30 years after their first bout.
Boxers Henry “Razor” Sharp and Billy “The Kid” McDonnen still hate each other after 30 years. Each had lost a fight against the other in the 80s, but a final tie-breaker never took place. Their rivalry is made worse by the woman between the two champions. These days, while Sharp works in a factory, McDonnen plays the clown in his seedy bar in Pittsburgh. Until the son of their former promoter proposes the two 60-year-olds get together for one last time in the ring. The penniless Sharp accepts the idea for the money, while McDonnen sees it as chance to finally beat his rival. And so the two granddads start training intensively and find themselves having to work together to promote the match...
Better than it sounds, Grudge Match is a nice vintage comedy that risks being shot down by “serious” critics – who apparently would prefer pseudo-intellectual drivel by Von Trier over the funny dialogue of an unpretentious film whose sole aim is to entertain. The touching Sylvester Stallone, the sweet Kim Basinger back from out of nowhere, Robert De Niro and Alan Arkin are all sure to move the public... especially those no longer quite so young.
