In their travels between two cities that are as strange as they are different - Detroit and Tangier - the stylish vampires Adam and Eve go in search of their favorite drug: very fresh, healthy and non-contaminated blood. But the couple’s routine is interrupted by the arrival of Ava, Eve’s little sister. Cute as a button but with a disruptive soul, this young bohemian vamp has a habit of disturbing the lives of those who’d rather have things go the way they always have…

Jim Jarmush - Dead Man, Broken Flowers and One Night on Earth - offers up a full-on vampire movie, after previously just flirting with the subject. Inspired by Mark Twain’s “Adam and Eve Diaries”, Jarmush makes sure not to cite him directly. As usual, he places great emphasis on the soundtrack – written by Neil Young – and on the editing, which is sophisticated as always. With its underground esthetic strongly reminiscent of the 1980’s, Only Lovers Left Alive is a beautiful hymn to the night. Even if it’s not Jarmush’s best film, it’s leagues better than what Tony Scott was aiming at – and missing by a mile – in 1983’s cheesy cult classic, The Hunger.
