A marathon runner and Olympic medalist moves into an old folks’ home and decides to run one last race.

In 1956, Paul won Olympic gold. A long time ago. Now he’s so old that he and his wife are moving to an old folks’ home. It’s a beautiful place, but basically life there is just waiting for death between arts and crafts and sing-alongs. And so Paul wants to enter one more race, which means training at age 77 for the Berlin Marathon. As Paul gets ready for the race, his friends in the senior’s home are inspired.

Although the title implies the main character will collapse at the finish line, Sein letztes Rennen is a feel-good movie with a quiet humor about a subject we will all face at one point. Dieter Hallervorden is excellent, funny and warmhearted. He is the soul of a film with just one message: that convention is overrated and freedom is everything. You’re only old if you believe you are.
