A father searches for his young son and finds the problems of Indian society.
A small family with big problems: father, mother, a son about 12, a daughter about 8, not much money. The father works as a zipper repair man, calling out for orders as he walks through Delhi’s poverty-stricken neighborhood. The mother keeps house and looks after the children. When the son is offered work for a month in another city, they take the opportunity. But he doesn’t return, so the father goes off in search of him. What he finds is that he has taken the problem of Indian society for granted.
India on film is usually colorful and festive, but its great masses live in precarious conditions. This Canadian/Indian production looks at the basic problems of Indian society without resorting to contrived drama or exotic abnormalities. And so the father’s geographical and social odyssey becomes an extensive tour of social injustices.
