A lawyer gets involved in drug trafficking without realizing how dangerous that is.

Despite not being from the world of crime, a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) decides to participate in one big drug haul from Mexico to the States, hoping that if he does this just once, he’ll finally be able to cover all his debts. Ignoring the warnings of his main collaborator, a very colorful club owner (Javier Bardem) and those of a mysterious and cynical intermediary (Brad Pitt), the counselor only realizes that he and his girlfriend (Penelope Cruz) are in deep trouble when the $20 million shipment disappears and the backers rear their ugly heads...

From his first novels to his two last bestsellers – both adapted for the screen (The Road and No Country for Old Men) – the writer Cormac McCarthy (both screenwriter and producer of this movie) shows us a world reigned only by cruelty, violence and endless suffering. Director Ridley Scott confirms McCarthy's nihilism once again in The Counselor by having the greedy and cruel characters in this seamy story recite pompous dialogue about the loss of a loved one or of grief. Among the five-star cast, where each is given their own little moment, Cameron Diaz outshines everyone else.
