The Lone Ranger
With the help of an eccentric American Indian, a masked crusader fights corruption in the Wild West.
The very proper lawyer John Reid (Armie Hammer) teams up with an unpredictable American Indian named Tonto (Johnny Depp) to go after Butch Cavendish. The gold-hungry bad guy has cruelly killed Texas Ranger Dan Reid, John's brother, who tried to keep the peace with the Indians. Realizing that the law is different out in the desert, John dresses up as a masked crusader to fight corruption in the Wild West, helped along by Tonto, who often has strange ideas. The aim is to make sure Cavendish neither gets his hands on the natural resources of Texas nor controls the railroads – in a region where crime runs rampant...
A fabulous locomotive derailment; a horse chase on top of the roof of a train; a corrupt army of cavalrymen: it seems more like a 007 flick starring Zorro than a western. Well-known in the US, the Lone Ranger had a radio serial in the 1930's, a TV show in the 50's, was adapted for the big screen and is the hero of comic books. This is perhaps why Gore Verbinski's (director of Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2, and 3) movie didn't do well in North America – it's too much of a cult object. Seen from this side of the Pacific, Johnny Depp is sure to please his many fans – with every hilarious flutter of his made-up eyelashes.
