In The Zero Theorem, flamboyant imagination of Terry Gilliam is a mix of mistake and detail: unsurprisingly, the director of Brazil opens the doors to an exciting universe full of fantastic trivialities, bizarre contraptions and iconoclastic characters. But similar to another man who is the victim of his amazing former powers (Tim Burton), Gilliam seems to be trapped in a hysterical world, awkwardly trying to make up for an empty plot by filling his movie with a surplus of wacky ideas and outlandish apparitions – Matt Damon as a tyrannical chameleon; Tilda Swinton as a virtual shrink. More quality is needed to raise this movie above zero.
