A man is forced into hypnosis to find a missing stolen painting

When an art heist goes wrong, one of the auction room's employees is forced to undergo hypnotherapy in order to find a missing painting. Despite torture and threats, the only man able to find the priceless artwork swears he cannot remember where it is. But his forced therapy soon unveils darker secrets than expected and unleashes an series of strange events in a dreadful escalade of violence...

This latest work by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, 127 Hours, Trainspotting) takes its audience down a brutal rabbit hole of shock and incomprehension, thanks to its intricate, devious and troubling script. His precise kind of filmmaking guides the spectator to the sordid story's breath-taking outcome, winding in and out of its clever plot turns with striking creativity. In spite of quite a few inconsistencies, Trance is a visceral experience and a hypnotic one indeed.
