Stockholm, 1982: against current trends, Bobo and Klara are crazy about punk. The two tomboys found a punk band, never mind that Bobo can’t play drums and Klara can’t play bass. So they talk the pious Hedvig into playing guitar for them and complete the band. The trio become fast friends, although they have to overcome a crisis or two.

As with his previous films (Tillsammans, Together, Lilja-4-ever) Lukas Moodysson also wrote the screenplay for We are the Best. This time around, he had source material: the comic book Never Goodnight, drawn by his wife Coco. The creative couple was the same age as their main characters in 1982, which lends an authentic ambience to this retro comedy. We are the Best is an adorable story about young friendship and the music that binds the girls together. Cinematographer Ulf Brantas supplies the visual verve hat enhances the teenage conflict between unfiltered enthusiasm and overdramatic sadness, much as he did in Together.
