Until age 91, Alain Resnais was a powerful artist, full of intense energy and imagination. Unfortunately, in his latest film the director has created a completely different, hostile cinematic world in which he tends to mock the audience back on earth. And so Aimer, boire et chanter looks a lot like Vous n'avez encore rien vu: an illusion made of cardboard and vaudeville, playing with set pieces, that is carried by his favorite artists and some new faces. Once more the film is almost experimental, not provoking any emotion and bogged down by his heavy prejudice. So for the time being, Resnais’ last masterpiece still remains the fabulous Herbes Folles.
