Every year in spring, strips of fertile land are created on the Inguri River, the natural border between Georgia and Abkhazia, before disappearing again with the rain. An old Abkhazian and his granddaughter settle on one of these ephemeral islands to grow corn, while border guards make their rounds on each side of the river. One day a soldier is stranded on their little island ...
Still and silent, doomed to be swallowed by the cycle of nature, a piece of earth moves during a summer as conflict rages in Georgia. This is the scene of George Ovashvili’s strange and fascinating piece of theater, which centers on a grandfather and his granddaughter. It skillfully communicates a lot with sparse dialogue, (the relationship between the old man and his daughter, the birth of the girl under the summer sun, the perpetual motion of the war), avoiding the traps of auteur filmmaking. Corn Island looks at mankind and war within the quiet vastness of nature, highlighting striking images of this unusual island. It transmits a special emotion that is especially beautiful, as it is also elusive and mysterious.
