Raoul Nordling, the consul of Sweden, tries to convince a Nazi general named Choltitz not to bomb Paris.
Paris, August 25, 1944. The sun is about to come up as Allied troops march on the city. Nazi General von Choltitz of the occupying forces prepares to destroy the city, on the orders of Hitler, with a dozen bombs placed underneath monuments and bridges. Resolved to stop him from carrying out his mission, Raoul Nordling, the consul of Sweden, arrives at the general’s headquarters armed with nothing but diplomacy in hopes of saving the City of Light.
Three years after the success of the play in Paris, German director Volker Schlöndorff, winner of the Golden Palm and an Oscar for Best Foreign Film for The Tin Drum in 1980, turns an incredible story into a grandiose film. André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup, both amazing, return to the roles they perfected in the stage version for an impressive, noble and extremely powerful face-to-face set in a little-known moment of history. Whether what they say and do really happened doesn’t matter: Diplomacy is primarily a film. A magnificent film.
