Divergent - Die Bestimmung

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A young woman discovers she doesn’t belong to any of the five factions governing the post-apocalyptic society in which she lives.

In a post-apocalyptic America, society is divided into five factions to maintain order: Erudite, Amity, Candor, Abnegation and Dauntless. At 16, every child takes a test to see which faction they belong to. But like every system, it has a flaw: the Divergents are complex beings who don’t fit into any faction. When she discovers she is a Divergent, Tris decides to join the Dauntless faction, which polices the nation. But Divergents are actively hunted, and she will soon discover the real reason why...

Given that Divergent is clearly trying to recreate the phenomenal success of The Hunger Games, it begs to be compared with it. The future franchise starring Shailene Woodley falls short: it has neither the value nor the strength of it competitor. Also adapted from a series of novels centered on a rebellious adolescent implicated in a violent revolution violent within an American dystopia, Divergent suffers from extreme clumsiness that contaminates all aspects of the movie – regimented and overpowering characters, crude twists and turns, a simplistic universe and shoddy subtext. The only upside is a marvelous performance by Shailene Woodley, as well as an intriguing world that offers decent entertainment and hope for improvement in the sequel.
