Locked up in a psychiatric hospital since his romance with Mary Swanson went sour, Lloyd Christmas is regularly visited by Harry Dunne, who refuses to abandon his best friend. But after 20 years, he realizes that Lloyd isn’t sick at all: he’s been faking as a joke. Now properly reunited, they are soon given bad news: Harry has a severe health problem and needs a kidney to survive. Because Lloyd refuses to give Harry his, they go off in search of Harry’s daughter, the product of an old fling he never knew, but whom he nevertheless wants to ask for help …

A time when Hollywood is working on sequels to Star Wars and Jurassic Park is the best time to question whether nostalgia really works. Dumb et Dumber To demonstrates the limits of making a sequel out of a 1994 hit, no matter how legendary: same team, same formula, same idiotic humor, references to pop culture (Bill Murray cooking Breaking Bad style). Less cynical Hollywood than absolute brainlessness; illustrated by a series of sketches that are more or less inspired; dominated by Jim Carrey’s rubber face. The result is a useless movie that is too classic in its insanity, proving that the golden age of the Farrelly brothers (There’s Something About Mary) is definitely behind them.
