Le Masque de San
This is the story of an African mask. Lost in a western collection, it returns to Mali thanks to a man who decides to research its meaning, from its time with his family to its origins as a mask used in dance rituals. This turns into a complicated quest into the culture of Mali, to a place where magic and reality go hand in hand…
Jacques Sarasin is without a doubt more interesting than his movie, Le Masque de San, his first feature. His previous works are a handful of documentaries about the career of a sailor, the vice president of a developmental foundation for social habitats in Africa and Latin America, and the manager of a food development company. Sarasin has therefore been all around the world, experiencing cultures and people, and with this film has tried to apply these experiences to the story of the mask from Mali and the man trying to reconnect with his own history. Laudable intentions, especially in these somber times, but the result is quite soporific, turning into a series of ordinary, awkward discussions filmed without any great passion or depth.
