Two opposing sisters decide to secretly write a book.

The Dupin sisters are almost complete opposites. Blonde, worldly, narcissistic, Iris marries a rich lawyer to support her bourgeois existence. Introverted, intellectual, mistreated by those around her, Josephine supports her unemployed, cheating husband. When she decides to throw him out, she finds herself alone with the bills. But Iris, who’s looking for a new meaning in life, has a proposition for her: Josephine should use her talents to secretly write a novel for her. A book that will make a star out of one of the sisters, while solving the financial problems of the other...

This movie seems incredibly substandard in the first scenes. It’s hard to know where the problem lies, if it’s the actors, the dialogue, the directing or the general tone that makes its seem off. However, just as with its mysterious title, Cécile Telerman’s movie, adapted from the novel by Katherine Pancol, reveals its value over time. Carried by an excellent cast of characters who are tormented by desires that are typically human, the story soon captures the audience. And Emmanuelle Béart shines brightly as a woman devoured by a profound malaise.
