My Old Lady

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A man sets off to Paris from New York to sell the apartment he has inherited from a father he never really knew. What he doesn’t expect is that it comes with an old lady and he won’t be able to do anything with it until she dies. Also, she lives there with her daughter. Hoping to resolve the situation somehow, the man moves in and discovers a few unexpected things about his father…

For his directorial debut, the very respectable American screenwriter Israel Horovitz has made an average movie about family secrets between three expatriates living in a Paris apartment. The premise is familiar, with classic laughs and tears set in a Parisian postcard with an easy listening soundtrack. Unsurprisingly, it’s the actors who are the draw: the prestigious trio Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas and Maggie Smith make the best of an otherwise uninteresting movie, thanks to their professional acting chops.
