Need for Speed
Video game adaptation with Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul: an ex-con seeks revenge on his former partner with a street race.
Even though he shows great talent as a racecar driver and mechanic, Tobey remains stuck in upstate New York. When one of his best friends dies in an illegal race, Tobey even does time in prison. The man who caused the accident, the now famous Dino, gets away clean. When Tobey gets out, he’s ready for retribution: the year’s most important street race will get him both prize money and revenge on Dino. Although he gets a fast car from a dealer named Julia, he hardly has time to get out to the west coast – which will also break his parole.
Former stuntman Scott Waugh makes a good director for the adaptation of the successful computer game Need For Speed. At least the (numerous) racing scenes are well done, catapulting the audience directly behind the wheel. He doesn’t use a lot of CGI, instead relying on good old-fashioned stunts. The screenplay, however, could have used a little boost, resulting in bland dialogue (despite good actors) and a movie that’s not much more than a Fast & Furious clone.
