The rom-com is a merciless genre; it excuses no infringement of its specifications, under pain of greatly disappointing its audience. Given that, it’s clear that Manu Payet’s risk has paid off: Situation amoureuse: c'est compliqué offers 1:40 of humor, tenderness, hilarious supporting roles and charming scenes. First-time director Payet ups the ante by surrounding himself with a wonderful array of actors, including the sculptural Canadian Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage). All good reasons to see this inconsequential bit of pleasure, which is both banal and entertaining.
