2048. Perched on a mountain lost in the clouds, mankind has been reconstituted into a pacifist society, with no real emotions or memory of the past. Among the principles of this rigid society is a ceremony held at 16, when it is decided what profession each person will take on, based on their personality. Jonas and his friends are impatiently awaiting this rite of passage. But Jonas is not like the others: he has been chosen by the Elders to become the new Receiver of Memories, who must carry all the memories of mankind within him. But his teacher will reveal much more than that to him, he will open Jonas’ eyes to the real nature of existence…

This kind of rubbish seems to be taking over the sci-fi world. Along the same vein as Divergent, The Host, Beautiful Creatures and Mortal Instruments, The Giver by Philip Noyce offers a plot that has long been worn thin. A clinical dystopia, a fascist society, emo adolescents, uptight adults – all wrapped around a plot about the birth of a hero with exceptional powers. The adaptation of the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry was an ongoing project of Jeff Bridges’ for almost two decades. This did nothing for its quality, because the movie has absolutely no imagination and is obviously stolen from Logan’s Run, 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. With its all-too neat direction that is not helped by an unspectacular screenplay, the movie also serves up an exceedingly naïve main character, overusing pompous archival clips to represent each emotion, and the transition from black and white to color to heavily underline the beauty of a world in which love has been resurrected. The Giver is enough to make you lose faith in this genre of movies.
