In the American west, a single woman is charged with bringing home three insane women.

1854. In the arid American west, Mary Bee Cuddy, a woman of character who runs a prosperous farm, battles the solitude that surrounds her. When she finds out her parish is looking for a man to accompany back to their families three women who have gone insane, she decides to apply for the job. As she prepares herself for the long journey, which will take several weeks, she meets George Briggs, a vagabond whom she saves from certain death. In exchange, he comes along to help her travel back to the Mississippi, across a savage and hostile America...

Nine years after winning best actor and best screenplay for The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Tommy Lee Jones is back at the Cannes Film Festival with his second big-screen film as a director. The appeal of the cowboy he played in his directorial debut is fully realized in this atypical but very straightforward western, carried by a melancholic austerity as well as ample violence. Most likely at ease in the role of gruff brigand, Jones gives the more powerful lead to Hilary Swank, who hasn’t had the opportunity to shine like this in many years.
