The Sturgeon Queens
In the Lower East Side of Manhattan, there is a Jewish deli called Russ and Daughters that has been popular with food lovers since it was opened by Joel Russ in 1914. Taken over by his daughters Hattie, Anne and Ida in the 1930’s, the deli has become a hotspot for generations of locals and a draw for tourists.
It’s hard to make money with food, no matter how good it is. After having filmed the deli in 2007 for her documentary The Jews of New York, director Julie Cohen looks at the extraordinary lives of a Jewish family, from their arrival in the early 1900s to getting their place in the history of the city thanks to their culture. A great way to shine a light on the Jewish community for the 100th anniversary of Russ and Daughters, thanks to the enthusiastic commentary by celebrities like Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who talk about love and caviar. But beyond that, The Sturgeon Queens is only moderately interesting and Julie Cohen never really delves much deeper.
