Une nouvelle amie
Linked by deep friendship since childhood, Claire and Laura live parallel lives. Claire is married to David, Laura to Gilles. But when Laura dies of a serious illness after giving birth to her daughter, she leaves an enormous void in the lives of her girlfriend and her husband, who try to support each other in mourning. By accident, Claire catches David in Laura’s clothing. United by the secret, they begin an unconventional friendship…
With a tremendous output of five film over just four years, François Ozon risks running out of inspiration, as seen by his last efforts, despite the financially successful Potiche. The New Girlfriend, his 15th film, offers sweet, loving and modern characters and stories beyond the usual. Inspired by Ruth Rendell’s novel of the same name, this story of obstructed love and unusual sex is astonishing in its sensitivity, sincerity and humor, as well as in the way is elegantly offers a mirrored portrait of two lethargic women. Unsurprisingly, there is not enough energy left to properly illuminate the movie’s characters or support the troubling performances of Romain Duris and Anaïs Demoustier.
