Nathan is no ordinary teenager. He has a form of autism, is passionate about math and has retreated into himself since the death of his father, who died in a car accident that Nathan was also involved in. Worried, his mother Julie arranges for him to get special lessons from Martin Humphreys, an nonconformist teacher who participated the Math Olympics when he was a boy. This inspires Nathan to take exams for the British team, which gets him into the selection for the best of the best, which will take place in Taipei…

X+Y is a sensitive, funny and often moving debut by Morgan Matthews that has noble intentions. That doesn’t make it a simple or feel-good movie, nor does it make it a good, straightforward melodrama. While well-crafted, X+Y offers neither sparks nor surprises, despite a fabulous cast that includes Rafe Spall, Sally Hawkins and Asa Butterfield, who was promoted to a solid career by Martin Scorsese (Hugo). Verdict: a sweet, inoffensive and quickly forgotten film, much less recommendable than many other small, marginal films.
