Caroline leaves Paris for a small village in the south of France to pick up the body of her mother, from whom she has been estranged her whole life. She arrives to find her mother lived in a beautiful villa in the mountains, where she meets the wacky entourage that made up her mother’s friends, especially Pattie, an odd woman who immediately latches on to Caroline. When she is supposed to leave the day after the funeral, she finds out her mother’s body has disappeared. And so she stays on during the investigation, slowly getting to know the people of this strange village…
The brothers Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu are brilliant. Their sensitivity, madness and independent spirit have made them unique , recognizable and likeable filmmakers, authors of movies like To Paint or Make Love, Happy End and Love is the Perfect Crime. They have built a bridge between the popular movies and auteur cinema that divide French film, halfway between genre movies (thrillers, science-fiction) and brash comedies. 21 Nights With Pattie continues along the same vein. Despite a few flaws, starting with the casting of Isabelle Carré as an introvert and Karin Viard as a vulgar extrovert, their new movie offers enough surprises, weirdness and beauty to make it remarkable, very entertaining and with its own character.
