A Perfect Day
Somewhere in the Balkans, 1995. Attached to a group of United Nations aid workers, Mambru discovers a dead body in one of the few wells keeping the local people alive. Trying to find a way to solve this crisis in the middle of a war zone, he experiences yet another complicated day alongside B, a middle-aged man who’s a bit off the wall; Sophie, a young idealistic French woman; Damir, their interpreter; and Katya, an old acquaintance in charge of bringing their operations to an end, since the area is supposed to be at peace now...
"A drama within a comedy, inside a road movie, in a war film": hard to better describe A Perfect Day than in the words of its director, the Spaniard Fernando León de Aranoa (Mondays in the Sun). This excellent tragicomedy set in the stony landscape of the Balkans tells about war in a way that is lighthearted without ignoring the violence of reality, it has fun with the comedy of horror without succumbing to bad taste. The filmmaker walks this tightrope with astonishing ease, largely helped by the enormous energy created by its amazing troupe of international actors: Puerto Rican Benicio Del Toro, American Tim Robbins, French Melanie Thierry and Ukrainian Olga Kurylenko. Presented at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes, A Perfect Day seems doomed to go unnoticed (the release date was pushed back) – one more reason not to miss it.
