A forensic pathologist, Janusz is regularly confronted with crime scenes of suicide or murder. At home, he confronts the morbid behavior of his anorexic daughter Olga, whom he hasn’t been able to help since the death of his wife, her mother. When the teenager attempts suicide, he decides to send her to a clinic for treatment. There, Anna works as a therapist who oversees the patients – and who also believes she can communicate with the dead.

After investigating prostitution with Juliette Binoche in Elles and a homosexual priest in In the Name Of, Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska sets her light touch to this odd story about a medium, a forensic pathologist and a teenage anorexic. Awarded the Best Director Silver Bear in Berlin, the filmmaker has a talent for creating an atmosphere without overdoing the dialogue (helped along by great performances by leads Janusz Gajos, Maja Ostaszewska and Justyna Suwala), drawing her characters with finesse and even humor thanks to her precise mise en scène. Under her interrogative eye and brutal images, Body exudes something unexpected and unforeseen that gives it a remarkable quality.

Perfect mixture of humor and deep reflection on human condition, dying, metaphysics and body itself.
