Antoine is 40, with two children and a divorce about to happen. So he examines his existential anguish, realizing that the death of his mother, who was found drowned near the island of Noirmoutier, is the source of his doubts. Together with his sister Agathe, he goes back to the place they grew up in search of the truth behind their family’s troubled past – a truth that is not only hard but also dangerous…

The title refers to the effect secrets and lies can have on us as they come back and hit us in the face. A good indication of the level of subtlety of this moralizing dramatic comedy made by consensus, that advances with cautious and ordinary suspense. A new adaptation of a novel by Tatiana De Rosnay, after Sarah’s Key with Kristin Scott Thomas in 2010, this movie by François Favrat (The Role of Her Life, A Better Life) may satisfy fans of then genre thanks to its well-oiled machinery as well as a sufficient amount of surprises emotional scenes. But as evidenced by the bland performances of its stars Laurent Lafitte, Mélanie Laurent and Audrey Dana, Boomerang isn’t much more than a small, phoned-in psychodrama.
