New York, 1957. The Cold War is in full swing. Hunting down Soviet spies, the American authorities arrest Rudolf Abel, who is suspected of treason. Charged with representing him to demonstrate that American justice is impartial, the lawyer James Donovan decides to defend him humanely, and therefore quickly becomes an enemy in the eyes of the Americans. But when a pilot sent by the CIA to spy on the enemy disappears in Russia, Donovan is assigned to negotiate a prisoner exchange in Berlin…

Do the Coen brothers sell their worst scripts to others? After Gambit with Colin Firth and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, the cult directorial duo supplied the script for Bridge of Spies, the fourth collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks since Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal. This spy thriller belongs to the legendary directors minor works: the movie lacks bite, soul and daring. Although well-crafted, excellently lit and with perfect performances by the cast (Tom Hanks is always credible in the role he plays), Bridge of Spies is too stereotypical and cautious for both its subject matter and to be recognizable as the work of the master Spielberg.
