Clément is an absent-minded, single primary school teacher who loves the theater. Especially when Alicia is on stage, a renowned actress he admires and whom he meets by chance at his school when she asks him to tutor her nephew. It’s love at first sight. But things gets complicated when Caprice, a young and somewhat nutty young actress, shows up determined to make him hers. A distraction that leaves room for Clément’s best friend Thomas to go after Alicia…

Usually insouciant and sweet, Emmanuel Mouret’s movies have lately turned more obscure in cases like Une autre vie, a romantic drama with Joey Starr instead of the director onscreen. Caprice, his eighth film, has him back on track. Seemingly simple at first glance, Mouret offers an astonishing bittersweet love story that starts out wacky only to become an increasingly tender tragedy. The phantom of François Truffaut glides through this movie, which offers Virgine Efira a wonderfully nuanced role.
