De l'autre côté de la mer
A former war photographer haunted by the ghosts of his experiences, Jean has retreated to a property in southern Italy to photograph trees in silence. One day, he decides to return to reality: he crosses the sea and goes to Albania, where he took his last photo. He finds Mira hidden within in the tree he wants to photograph. Rejected by her father, the freedom-loving Mira has decided to flee the country and try to cross the sea ...
There's something unexpected and touching in this meeting between an old man damaged by his past and this girl crushed by her present. He returns to Albania to reconnect with his painful memories as she tries to escape a country that prevents her from building a future. The chemistry between Carlo Brandt and the mesmerizing Kristina Ago naturally is the greatest strength of Pierre Maillard’s film. Albania’s amazing scenery adds character to De l’autre côté de la mer, especially during the last part. It is through these elements that the film generally manages to overcome its weaknesses, which includes a simplistic screenplay that never manages to really get going or touch the audience.
