Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer
Germany 1957. Prosecutor Fritz Bauer receives evidence of the whereabouts of Adolf Eichmann, responsible for the mass deportation of Jews, who went into hiding in Buenos Aires. Having spent his career seeking Nazi criminals, Bauer is determined to lead the investigation to extradite and try Eichmann. But he is blocked by the German administration, which is preoccupied with reconstruction. Obsessed by his thirst for justice, Bauer decides to contact the Mossad, the Israeli secret service...
The People vs. Fritz Bauer is a soft film. A fascinating idea on paper, it has an interesting perspective on Germany, but this is an uninspired, academic film – too well-behaved, just like its leads character. It’s difficult to become captivated by the thriller aspect of this movie by Lars Kraume, who struggles to add life and excitement to a dusty plot. Inevitably reminiscent of 2014’s Labyrinth of Lies, which was also not very convincing. And that’s too bad, because the subject, has strong cinematic potential and deserves a high-level production.
