Dora oder Die sexuellen Neurosen unserer Eltern
Dora is 18. Mentally challenged, she lives in a bubble, protected by her parents. When her mother decides to take her off her meds, Dora awakens to the world, especially to her own body. Attracted to a man she meets in the street, she has her first sexual experience with him and falls in love. Despite her parent’s anger and their doubt that the man is good for their daughter, Dora continues to see him. And while her mother tries everything to have another child, she discovers that Dora is pregnant…
It takes a lot of courage and finesse to tell such an honest and nonconformist story. This movie by Stina Werenfels, the director of Going Private, is adapted from the play by Lukas Bärfuss, and will surprise some in its treatment of the sexuality and pregnancy of a mentally challenged young woman. But Dora is neither shocking nor moralizing, and it refuses to offer life lessons. Victoria Schulz gives a gripping performance together with the excellent Jenny Schily; these two strong female characters make this a very good, sensitively produced film.
