When Nick meets Jess in the bar of a luxury hotel, he quickly realizes she’s a con artist – because so is he. But Nick has much more experience and is taken by her charms, and Jess’ play is extremely lame, so he decides to show her the ropes. Excited by the idea of perfecting her game, Jess follows him to New Orleans and joins his team. But things get complicated when the two start to fall for each other…
Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Ben Affleck and Kristen Stewart were wise to pass on this rom that is only vaguely com: simplistic, coarse, sexist, Focus is about nothing and is happy to recycle the same old con artist formula – who’s playing whom, what’s real, where does the game end – it’s all the same boring old story centered on a moral compass that spins in all directions. At least there is Will Smith, who cuts a fine hero, and the beautiful Margot Robbie, who already lit up Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street. But their talent can’t save this bland and boring movie from the co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the makers of the interesting I Love You Phillip Morris and the overvalued Crazy, Stupid, Love.
