Fragments du Paradis
Switzerland is often seen as heaven on earth. But do its inhabitants believe in the hereafter? The faithful, agnostics and atheists all feel the need for a narrative when confronting death. What remains of the paradise that once promised eternal happiness? As it encounters people in the twilight of their years, this film goes on a moving, offbeat and personal quest of the depictions of a place of hope and doubt, shared by all of humanity.
How to solve one of the biggest questions that haunts humanity? By taking care to not just offer a single answer and by adopting a clear approach. Director Stéphane Goël discretely interviews dozens of senior citizens about the possibility of something beyond death, an "after” to life on earth. Nothingness, bliss, stars, total whiteness, music, reunions with relatives: the answers range from those with very traditional views to those who talk about NASA or believe we could have several lives, like cats. Fragments du paradis offers a fascinating panorama of the beliefs and expectations of ordinary men and women, whether they are religious, agnostic or atheist. The film thus shines less due its mise en scene than thanks to these human fragments, alternately amazing and touching, which make up an interesting documentary.
