Free to Run
Only 50 years ago, distance running was a Puritan and elitist activity reserved for men. Those who went out running in nature in their free time were seen at best as eccentric and at worst as dangerous. But within the tumult of the 60s, the sport became an act of freedom and self-expression, gradually changing the face of the world.
Not just a documentary on running, Pierre Morath’s Free to Run is an uplifting look at the history of distance running that reflects a changing world that uses the sport as a standard quest for freedom from the narrow confines of society. In interviews, Bobbi Gibb, Frank Shorter, Kathrine Switzer and Noël Tamimi tell the story of how running and footracing became a symbol of the anti-establishment and feminism, before finally (and paradoxically) turning into mainstream phenomenon that recreated a social gap. Free to Run is an exciting film of surprising power.
