My Internship in Canada

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Independent MP for Prescott Makadew in Rapides-aux-Outardes, Steve Guibord suddenly finds himself with the responsibility of having the deciding vote in determining whether Canada will go to war. While the country is won over by protests, the prime minister promises Guibord a ministerial post in exchange for his support. But Guibord gradually begins to question what the right thing to do is, especially thanks to Sovereign Pascal, a young intern newly arrived from Haiti, who has an idealistic view of politics...

After going Hollywood with The Good Lie, a sappy flick starring Reese Witherspoon that went unnoticed, Philippe Falardeau returns to his homeland with a political comedy: Canada is on the brink of war and the country is torn on the issue. The premise is amusing, especially for a country so quiet on the international stage. Except that in reality, My Internship in Canada is neither funny nor original, nor is it inspired. The superficial script very quickly boils down to a series of tasteless scenes and dialogues, barely relieved by the undeniable talents of the actors Patrick Huard, Suzanne Clément and Irdens Exantus. The director does what he can, but he cannot overcome a soporific screenplay.
