Rock star and musical goddess, but not only that. Entering onto the music scene in the late 60s, first as the singer of the psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin made her mark with her inimitable voice and wild stage performances. The film traces the journey of this memorable shooting star, who died at age 27.

The hidden, monstrous face of religion in Deliver Us from Evil and Prophet's Prey; teens trapped by justice in West of Memphis; child abuse stifled by Hollywood in An Open Secret: director Amy Berg has had an impact and shaken spirits with her investigative documentaries. Seeing her make a movie about Janis Joplin’s mythically short but fiery career is therefore surprising. There is no revelation or scandal, instead Berg offers a nuanced portrait of an unforgettable icon, whose voice still echoes worldwide more than forty years after her tragic death. With the usual techniques (interviews with relatives, archival footage) Janis: Little Blue Girl unwraps the icon to reveal the woman, daughter, artist, and vulnerable human being behind the voice. A flawless documentary that will appeal especially to fans of the singer.
