La dame dans l'auto avec des lunettes et un fusil
This is the strange story of Dany, the modest employee of a PR firm in 1970’s Paris, who gets an assignment from her boss, who is married to one of her old friends. Dany’s job is to prepare a business trip and to take the couple to the airport the next day. But when she decides to head south in their nice convertible to finally see the ocean that she has dreamed of for years, she doesn’t realize she will be implicated in a sordid story of murder, fraud and manipulation…
A useless exercise in style par excellence: chic but hollow, ambitious but bland, the third movie by cartoonist and scriptwriter Joann Sfar is a small and very unpleasant disaster. After winning a Best Film César for the biopic Gainsbourg, vie héroïque, and a Best Animated Film César for Le chat du rabbin, the director obviously got carte blanche to adapt the novel by Sébastien Japrisot. The result is a sort of twisted and sensual film noir that is obsessed by the lips and legs of the strange Freya Mavor and set in a wannabe Lynchian world – but one in which nothing works. Full of disembodied stereotypes, flashy direction, banal historical reenactment, a dumb and clichéd episodic plot, the overtly pretentious Dame dans l’auto avec des lunettes et un fusil offers nothing other than boredom.
