1957. Claude Lorius is 25 when he answers an ad to join an expedition to Antarctica, then mysterious and unknown. He falls in love with this unique continent, becoming one of the world’s best-known glaciologists and pin-pointing human beings as the cause of global warming. Luc Jacquet looks at the extraordinary career of a man fighting to save both the planet and humanity.
Like Claude Lorius, director Luc Jacquet seems to have fallen in love with Antarctica since March of the Penguins, the phenomenal success of 2004 that won the Best Foreign Film Oscar. 11 years later, he paints a portrait that is equally as passionate about Lorius as the man himself is about his life’s work – thanks also to amazing archival footage filmed by members of the first expeditions, who made a series of incredible discoveries. Unfortunately, the documentary lacks nerve and emotion, too quickly turning into a pedantic lecture with a conclusion aimed a general audiences. It neither does justice to Lorius’ brilliance, nor to the battle – so absolutely necessary – against global warming.
